Located at the crossroads of Southern New England, the Publick House has a tradition of pleasing hungry travelers.
Though not stuck in the past (the Inn now, for example, offers wireless Internet throughout), the Publick House does preserve the sedate charm of colonial New England.
The Tap Room, which is the Inn's a la carte dining venue, features well-worn furnishings, wide-board floors, a beamed ceiling, and an oversized, walk-in hearth. The effect is unmitigated living museum.
The Inn's dinner menu betrays a split personality. One section is focused on traditional Massachusetts Bay "victuals" -- New England Baked Scrod ($21), Chicken Pot Pie ($16), Yankee Pot Roast ($17), and New England Roasted Duck ($25).
A second segment of the bill of fare, which stakes out a contemporary stance, is reworked each season.
Its most current edition features the likes of Oven-roasted Salmon ($20) with balsamic reduction, bistro-style Steak Frites ($28), a Grilled Veal Chop ($30), and Lobster Ravioli ($21).
