Barack Obama is a master at grabbing and keeping his audience's attention, which is the number one goal of any public speaker. How does he do it? Here are five key lessons from Obama's rhetorical playbook.
Geoengineering — the concept of deliberately manipulating the earth’s climate system to counteract climate change — made its debut in Congress this week, which I suppose makes it officially “mainstream.” The House’s Committee on Science and Technology held a hearing on geoengineering — the first serious congressional review of the subject, according to committee chairman Rep. [...]
Hang onto this essential checklist, so you’ll know what to do when the time comes.

There's no question that New York's public transit is among the best in the world, along with cities like London and even Toronto. But if you really want bang for your public transportation buck - and if the MTA wants to win friends and influence people - look for lines that offer fabulous freebies.
Why do some places decide to go zero fare? One of the chief reasons is passenger aggression, which is often aggravated by long wait times and refusal to pay the fare. Often times the cost of operations that are usually paid for in part by transit fees are taken care of by local and private businesses looking to drive more traffic around their companies. Plus, zero-fare options make it more appealing for people to leave their cars at home, and give lower-income families more transportation options.
The options for zero-fare transport vary from selected sections to city-wide, but for those who use public transit - whether frequent or not - it's a happy bonus. Cities with zero-fare transport include a lot of European spots, such as Aubagne, Châteauroux, Vitré and Compiègne in France, the Belgium town of Hasselt, and Lübben, Germany. But there's actually quite a few Stateside options, too. For example, Utah's Cache Valley, Coral Gables in Florida and Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Certainly they're small cities, and have more options courtesy of a lower resident rate. But even larger cities offer some fare-free zones in certain areas with restrictions. Adelaide, Australia has a free zone on the Glenleg tram, as well as through the city loop - and residential areas have their own free neighborhood transport. Austin, Texas features a good deal with free service for to University of Texas students, staff and faculty, uniformed police, fire, and military personal, and City of Austin employees.
Bangkok, Thailand has over 800 free buses running 72 routes, while Miami has a peoplemover in the downtown area. Pittsburgh also has free transit in their downtown area, and Seattle offers free downtown fares between 6am and 7pm. And although New York also has some free fare zones, they're at the airport loop at JFK, and some Staten Island options depending on the origination and termination spots of their trip.
So while Manhattan is haggling their MTA prices, how about giving riders a break with some free fare options?

Like most brilliants, Lola won't spoon feed what's inside. Rather, she uses the ridiculous to convey her message with films like Night of the Living Gay.
Tonight, she has a triple feature at the Anthology Film Archives in New York City with Night of the Living Gay, Dragzilla and I Was a Tranny Werewolf. But first, I talked to Lola a bit about her films.
Horror films are sometimes morality plays, especially in the Friday the 13th series like the two people who have casual sex in the woods are the ones who get murdered. What is the message in the movie Night of the Living Gay? Are there similar messages in the other two that will be shown?
The message of Night of the Living Gay is that all of Manhattan is gay anyway, so why resist? The nightlife is better anyway.
