- UNWTO: Tourism Leaders call for Supportive Global Policies UNWTO: Tourism Leaders call for Supportive Global PoliciesLondon, UK / Madrid, Spain 11 November 2009Around 80 Tourism Ministers meeting at the UNWTO Ministers’ Summit (10 November at World Travel Market, London) called for global policies that are supportive of the travel and tourism industry. Ministers recalled that tourism is one of the world’s top job creators and can be a key driver of recovery and the transformation towards the Green Economy. As the global economy still struggles, governments were requested not to impose extra burdens on travel, such as fiscal measures, and to maintain stimulus policies in support of tourism as this in turn will contribute to sustainable economic growth.
- Spanish Prime Minister Meets with UNWTO Secretary-General at Moncloa Palace
The Prime Minister of Spain, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, received the Secretary-General of the UNWTO, Taleb Rifai, at the Moncloa Palace on Friday 6 November. The meeting underscores the close relations between the UNWTO as a specialized agency of the UN and Spain as its host country. The Prime Minister and the Secretary-General consider the forthcoming Spanish presidency of the European Union (EU) as an opportunity to highlight the value of tourism as well as its contribution to the economy, job creation, and the mitigation of the effects of climate change. They also agreed at the meeting that Spain’s leading position in tourism could and should be utilized within the context of the UNWTO in order to contribute to meeting today’s challenges.
- Confidence in Tourism Sector Gradually picking Up The decline in international tourism may have started to bottom out, according to the latest edition of the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. Worldwide, international tourist arrivals declined by 7% between January and August 2009, but the rate of decline has eased in the past few months. These results, as well as the most recent economic data, confirm UNWTO's initial forecast of a 5% decline in international tourist arrivals for the full year 2009. For 2010, UNWTO expects a moderate growth.

- EUROPEAN TOURISM ACTIVE AGAINST THE CRISISTourism is proving to be one of the most resilient sectors and can be a strategic vector in the way forward, as global economic conditions continue to deteriorate. This is among the main conclusions of UNWTO’s European member states meeting held in Baku, Azerbaijan, on the occasion of the 49th UNWTO Commission for Europe.
- New UNWTO Roadmap for Recovery for Tourism and Travel Call to World Leaders to include Sector in Economic, Stimulus Actions
- The 18th session of the UNWTO General Assembly concluded with unanimous endorsement of a Roadmap for Recovery to mainstream travel and tourism into economic stimulus packages being considered by global leaders. It underscored the enormous importance of the sector for job creation, trade and development.
- It expressed strong concern about the dangers of increasing taxes which focus on the sector at a time of economic uncertainty and called on governments to reconsider proposed increases.
- It also adopted a strong declaration on Facilitation of Tourism designed to encourage governments to remove unnecessary regulatory and bureaucratic restrictions on travel which hamper its flow and reduce its economic impacts.
- The 18th Session of the UNWTO General Assembly (5-8 October 2009) - Facing Global Challenges and setting the Framework for increased Efficiency Around 360 delegates representing 112 countries meet this week in Astana, Kazakhstan, on the occasion of the XVIII session of the UNWTO General Assembly. The gathering convened by the UN specialized agency for tourism will set the ground for how the travel and tourism sector can face the current economic downturn while staying on track with the twin challenges of climate change response and poverty alleviation. This Assembly will also initiate a far-reaching internal reform, starting with the election of a new Secretary-General.
- UNWTO: Increasing Confidence in 2010 Recovery for the Tourism Sector The conditions of the tourism market are starting to indicate stronger prospects for a recovery in 2010. These include macroeconomic upward revisions from the IMF together with preliminary international tourism figures until August this year. This suggests some moderation in the declining results of the first half of this year. In addition, the UNWTO Panel of Experts Confidence Index reflects stronger confidence in market conditions. International arrivals declined by 4% in July this year, a relative improvement when compared to decreases of 10% in May and 7% in June. Many destinations show a similar pattern of a gradual change for the better, particularly in Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
