“Exploring the Complimentary Technologies of AOI and X-Ray”

By Don Miller

This presentation will discuss several different methods of AOI (Automated Optical Inspection) and X-Ray inspection that are being utilized in the PCBA, Semiconductor,
and Microelectronics industries.
As products become more complex, with decreasing component sizes and increasing board densities, it is critical that one’s inspection systems can easily adapt. AOI
and X-Ray are flexible and complimentary technologies that have emerged as leaders in the area of non-contact test and it is important to understand their strengths and weaknesses before implementing them in your process. Topics include lighting, cameras, 2D vs. 3D imaging, and overall test / inspection philosophies.
The two guiding philosophies for the implementation of test and inspection equipment are prevention and detection. The philosophy that one adopts will affect
the technology (SPI, AOI and/or AXI) chosen and placement of the inspection equipment in the line.
