Forget 'What are your strengths and weaknesses?' If you want to get the real dope on prospective employees, ask job candidates these seven questions.
Jo-Ann Stores is posting impressive sales and earnings numbers and is an example of a retail sector on which Walmart doesn't have a steel grip.
In this economy, enticing offers abound. But a lot of so-called bargains may turn out to be raw deals.

My last blog post was about visiting Ponce's magnificent cathedral during December 12 for the singing of the traditional Mexican song, "Las Mañanitas," followed by mass. But there is a lot more to Ponce than its cathedral. Consider this
Ponce is a city with its own cultural heritage and quaint colonial beauty. It is also a city which takes its Christmas celebrations seriously, and perhaps its most beautiful tradition takes place each year on December 12 at the Catedral de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, one of the many beautiful landmarks of this city.
On December 12, thousands of Puerto Ricans visit the Cathedral to sing "las mañanitas," the traditional Mexican Christmas song, and celebrate mass. Why the Mexican version? Well, the cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, Mexico's patron saint, and Ponce's as well since 1757. For those of you who speak Spanish, here is a wonderful summary of what this tradition is all about. And for those of you who want to see a Christmas celebration replete with the solemnity, festivity and tradition of Puerto Rico, this is one place to do so.

I mentioned the upcoming Feria de Artesanías in my December Calendar, but given all that's going into the event, it deserves some elaboration. The arts and crafts fair takes place this weekend at the Luis Muñoz Rivera and Third Millennium Parks in the Puerta de Tierra neighborhood of San Juan. It's an easy taxi ride from just about anywhere in San Juan, or a short trolley ride from the pierfront in Old San Juan. And it's certainly worth either. Among other things, the two-day festival features:
- More than 400 arts and crafts stalls, along with arts and crafts workshops
- Troubador singers
- Performances by the Puerto Rico Concert Band, the Puerto Rico National Ballet, and other live acts.
- Plenty of food kiosks
Here's the full agenda for the event. As for what to look for among all the artists, check out my Christmas Shopping recommendations for ideas.

Thinking of where to stay if you're going to Puerto Rico for the holidays? Or just looking out for good deals? Either way, the sparkling new Sheraton Puerto Rico, located right next to the Puerto Rico Convention Center, wants to welcome you to the island. With the largest casino in Puerto Rico, an outdoor infinity pool (always an elegant touch) and a full-service Zen Spa, it already gives you plenty of reasons to visit. But there are two great deals currently on the table that might want you want to take a closer look.
For stays between now and January 30, the hotel is offering a "stay one night, get one night at 50%" promotion.
