    MAYODAN — Mrs. Cathleen D. Penn, 82, of 302 Wray Street, died Friday, November 20, 2009.

    Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, November 25, at Beulah Baptist Church in Madison, where she was a member. Burial will be in Citizen's Cemetery.

    She was a native of Rockingham County and a retired employee of Madison-Mayodan City Schools.

    She is survived by three sons, Robert L. Penn Jr. and Larry Penn, of Madison, and Jamie Penn of Stokesdale; two daughters, Linder Penn, of the home, and Mary Whitley of New York; two sisters, Mary Tucker of Eden and Mary Frances of Madison; and a host of grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

    The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the church and other times at the residence.
    Arrangements are entrusted to Perry-Spencer Funeral Home, Madison.

    Nora Lawson Barrow

    EDEN — Mrs. Nora Lawson Barrow passed away on Sunday, November 22, 2009, at the Brian Center in Yanceyville, N.C., as a result of Alzheimer's disease.

    A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 24, at Woodlawn Cemetery.

    Mrs. Barrow was born on April 18, 1932, in Frieze, Virginia, to Seaborn and Lizzy Lawson. She was the youngest of five children.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; her three brothers, Earl, Everette, and Ernest Lawson; her sister, Vertie Lawson Westbrook and her husband, Paul "Wormey" Barrow.

    She is survived by her son, Ricky "Butch" Barrow and wife, Teresa, of Hickory; her daughter, Vicki Barrow Gibson and husband, Willie, of Reidsville; her five grandchildren, Casey of Hickory, Ashley and husband, Seth, of Fort Bragg, N.C., Michelle and husband, Tim, of Reidsville, Christi and husband, Brad, of Live Oak, Fla., and DeAnna and husband, James, of Fayetteville, Ariz.; and her great-grandchildren, Paul, Olivia, Bradley, Ben, and Brenner.

    The family would like to send a loving and heartfelt thank you to Tyner and Eula Arthur, who took such wonderful care of Nora for 14 months prior to her being placed at Brian Center. Also, the family's loving and heartfelt thank you goes to all of the employees who work on the 500 Hall of the Brian Center, especially to RN Robin Tatum and CNA Betty Pyles, who not only treated Ms. Nora with respect, love and affection, as you would family, but also treated Nora's family members the same way.

    The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Boone-Reynolds Funeral Home, immediately preceding the service.

    Brewer Reid Dyer

    EDEN — Brewer Reid Dyer, 76, of 907 Seymour Court, was called to his heavenly home on Saturday, November 21, 2009.

    A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 25, at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Lawson Cemetery.

    Mr. Dyer was born April 26, 1933 in Rockingham County, N.C., son of the late John Bullard Ray Dyer and Alice Joyce Dyer.

    He was a member of Roberts Memorial Baptist Church but also attended Osborne Baptist Church, as well as the Christian Worship Center. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Mr. Dyer was a graduate of Leaksville High School and attended two years of technical training in Danville, Virginia.

    Surviving are three children, Lisa Dyer of Greensboro, Ashley Snead of Charlotte, and Nancy Woods of Eden; four sisters, Phyllis Stickels and husband, Bud, of Eden, Betty Citty and husband, John, of Reidsville, Nell Hubbard and husband, Wayne, of Eden, and Lynn Dyer of Eden; three brothers, Johnny Dyer and wife, Kitty, of Eden, Bobby Dyer and wife, Pat, of Boca Raton, Fla., and Richard Dyer and wife, Wanda, of Eden; and four grandchildren, J.R. Woods, Tim Woods, Katlyne Woods, and Bridgette Ratliff.

    The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at Fair Funeral Home and other times at the home of his late father, 911 Irving Avenue in Eden.

    STOKESDALE — Mr. Carl Lynn Isley went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, November 22, 2009.

    Carl's funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, November 25, at Maple Lawn Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

    A Rockingham County native, Carl was born on August 21, 1954, the son of the late Edward and Isabel Mosley Isley.

    Carl was a member of Maple Lawn Baptist Church, where he enjoyed attending services and activities. Carl worked at the Rockingham Opportunity Center, where he loved his work and co-workers.
    Carl had a loving heart and a personality that matched it. When he smiled, you couldn't help but smile. He was a kind-hearted man who loved going out to eat and working in the yard.

    Surviving are his brothers, Ray Isley and wife, Nancy, of Stokesdale, Jerry Isley and wife, Mary, and Danny Isley and wife, Arlene, all of Reidsville; sisters Nadine Bates of Reidsville, Virginia Aheron and husband, Robert, of Stokesdale, Shirley Pegram and husband, Marvin, of Charlotte, Brenda Strader and husband, Jerry, of Reidsville, Rachel Wallace and husband, Kenneth, of Dry Fork, Va., and Carolyn Cayton and husband, Kenneth, of Stokesdale; sister-in-law, Betty Isley of Summerfield, and numerous nieces and nephews.

    The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. this evening, Tuesday, at Forbis & Dick Brooke Chapel, and other times at the home of Ray and Nancy Isley, 8312 Southard Road.

    REIDSVILLE — William Henry Johnson, of 952 Frank Road, died Friday, November 20, 2009.

    As a native and resident of Rockingham County for the majority of his life, he attended the local public schools and was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1965. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Vietnam Conflict.

    Spiritually, he was a faithful member of Saint Mariah United Holy Church, where he actively participated with the Male Chorus and Men's Fellowship and was a former Sunday School Superintendent.
    Following many years of dedicated service, he retired from the American Tobacco Company and the farming industry.

    Survivors are his beloved wife of 43 years, Geraldine Galloway Johnson, of the home; three daughters, Avis Gwynn and spouse, Lamont, of Stoneville, Sonya Pickard and spouse, Antoine, and Cynthia Millner and spouse, Darryl of Reidsville; two sons, William Johnson of Reidsville and Timothy Johnson and spouse, Calandra, of Caswell; 20 grandchildren; five sisters, Ann Kemp and spouse, Arthur, of Raeford, Elder Ruby Thompson and spouse, Pastor Leonard Thompson, of Danville, Virginia, Rosetta Johnson of New Haven, Conn., Ada Williams and spouse, Robert Earl, and Barbara Miller and spouse, Charlie of Reidsville; one aunt, Irene Whitsett; mother- in-law, Zenobia Galloway; four sisters-in-law, Annie Broadnax, Elsie Nimmons and spouse, Thomas, Cora McCoy and spouse, George, and Joann Moore and spouse, Leon; two brothers-in-law, William Galloway and James Galloway and spouse, Gloria; special niece, Allison Garnett; and additional nieces, nephews, other relatives and a multitude of treasured friends.
