  • O'Brien-Stephen and Bridget of NY
I am searching for any information about my gggrandparents Stephen and Bridget O'Brien. I believe they immigrated to the US between 1887 and 1889. Their children were Michael(m. Esther), Josephine, Margaret, Mary (Mamie), Robert, Ellen, Julia,(m. John Foy) and Rose(m. Leonard Jones). They lived in Manhattan, the Bronx and Brooklyn at different times. He rose through the ranks at a sporting goods company. I believe it was Spalding. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  • Re: NIELSEN / WILLADSEN IN PAULLINA
I know you posted this a long time ago but I am a great granddaughter of Peter Nielsen and Mary Willadsen. I used to visit her as a child in Los Angeles with my parents. My grandfather Niels Peter Nielsen was Dora's brother. I used to visit Carl & Dora also in Los Angeles with my parents. My dad was Charles Robert Nielsen and my mother was Lavella Mae Gaudian from Paullina. We moved to California in 1956. We visited the Nielsen's out here a lot while I was growing up. Both of my parents have passed away but I can give you some info about the Nielsens in California.
  • Re: O'Brien County death records / obits /cemeteries
Joan, while I'm not familiar with an internet site for the subject info, per se, both of the libraries in Primghar and Pauliina have copies of the newspaper "The O'Brien County Bell" on microfilm. If you know a death date or even a month, you should be able to locate a obituary/death notice in that paper.
Also I believe O'Brien county is in the process of updating cemetery records and is going to get them online... when? I couldn't tell you. In the mean time I fulfill grave marker requests for a site called www.FindAGrave.com. This site is searchable by cemetery, if you know it's name, or by location.
I do have a copy of The History of O'Brien County, dated 1979 that has informational sections on the following individual's families.
    Henry and Grace (Kolste) Kuiper
Herman and Anna Bergsma Kuyper (not a typo, that is how it is spelled in this book)
Wit/Witt - the only surnames close to this spelling I found was for
Mardella Witte listed in the section on the Henry (Heinrich)Hansen family married to a Ralph Hansen.
    Other Wit- surnames listed are
Witchell, Withee, Withaelter, Wittcap, Wittenmeyer, Wittkopp, Wittman and Wittrock.
I found no mention of the surname Fraij.
Email me and I can get you the information. (Though I'll be on vacation most of this week, but should get back to you by next Saturday(25th)

  • Re: Pleasant Hill Cemetery
Jerry, THANK YOU SO MUCH!! =) I truly appreciate your help in finding and posting Arnold and Nora's obits. As well as looking for their graves. I just had a small death notice for Arnold in our Tipton paper, that didn't provide much information. Thank you again! =)

  • Re: Pleasant Hill Cemetery
Ok, according to FindAGrave.com, Pleasant Hill Cemetery is the same location as St. Anthony's. I did do a drive through and didn't find a Ridenour marker, but will check with the city records.

  • Re: Arnold and Nora Ridenour of Primghar
From The O'Brien County Bell, March 20, 1969
Community Stunned by Death of Arnold Ridenour
The heavy-hearted silence of a stunned community was a mute and sad reflection of the profound shock from the report of the sudden death of Arnold Ridenour, 57, local hardware retailer.
In apparent good health, Mr. Ridenour died late Monday evening at his home, the victim of a massive coronary attack which struck swiftly and with little or no warning after he had retired for the night. The efforts of Dr. A.D. Smith and the resuscitator squad were futile.
Best known for his dry wit and friendliness, Arnie's unexpected passing has dealt a hard blow to his wife and children, friends and relatives. Indeed he will be sorely missed by his fellow businessmen in the daily routine of business on the square.
Arnie and his wife Nora, owned and operated Ridenour Hardware, having purchased the business from W.A. Krumm in 1955. He farmed in Cedar and Linn Counties prior to moving here.
Mr. Ridenour was born June 18, 1911 near Tipton, Ia., and married Nora Fagre Nov. 8, 1940 at Stover, Mo.
He is survived by his wifeNora, a son Rex, a law student at Iowa City and a daughter, Retha, Mrs. Joe Sokol of Lincoln, Nebr., and one grandchiled, Scotty.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 21 at Grace Lutheran Church at 2 p.m. Pastor Clare Biegler will officiate with Gaudian Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

From The O'Brien County Bell, Sept. 18, 1975
Death claims Nora Ridenour; services Thurs.
Funeral services for Mrs. Arnold (Nora) Ridenour, Primghar, will be held Thursday, Sept. 18, 1975 at 1:30 p.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church, Primghar. Mrs. Ridenour died Monday, Sept. 15 at Baum Harmon Hospital.
Pastor Dennis Heifner will officiate at the services and interment will be at Pleasant Hill cemetery, Primghar, with Gaudian Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Greatly respected by many, Nora Ridenour was a woman whose smile, friendliness, compassion and wonderful philosophy of life touched many people during her life.
Nora Fagre Ridenour was born Jan. 28, 1905 at Blooming Prairie, Minn. Her parents were Theodore and Anna Fagre.
She received her schooling at Blooming Prairie schools and worked as a reporter for the Blooming Prairie, Minn., and Tipton, Iowa newspapers.
On Nov. 8, 1940, Nora Fagre married Arnold Ridenour at Stover, Missouri. They were the parents of two children, Retha (Mrs. Joe Sokol), San Juan Capistrano, California and Rex of Bettendorf, Iowa.
Mr. and Mrs. Ridenour farmed in Cedar and Linn Counties, Ia., until November, 1956 when they moved to Primghar where they owned and operated Ridenour Hardware until Arnie's death in 1969.
Nora was a lifelong member and active in the Lutheran Church.
Survivors include tow children, Retha Sokol and Rex; four grandchildren, Scott Joe and Karina Ann Sokol of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., and Jennifer Denise and Jason Arnold Ridenour of Bettendorf; two brothers, Alfred and Kinley Fagre of Oakland, Calif.
The family requests all memorials go to the American Cancer Society and/or Grace Lutheran Church, Primghar.

The Pleasant Hill Cemetery listed in Nora's obituary is unfamiliar to me, as I only know of the St. Anthony's Catholic Calvary Cemetery north of Primghar. Will investigate futher next time I am in Primghar and let you know what I find.

  • Arnold and Nora Ridenour of Primghar
I would like to locate the obits of Arnold and his wife, Nora Ridenour. Would someone be willing to look them up or tell me how I might obtain them? Is there a Historical Society or a Library I could contact?
