- Survey: Airline Fees Complicate Total Trip Cost Calculations
The airlines' continuing strategy to unbundle products and pricing remains troublesome for corporate travel managers keen to measure total trip costs. According to a recent survey conducted by the Association of Corporate Travel Executives, just 20 percent of 297 corporate buyers said their organizations track total trip expenditures "very well." When asked if they tabulate total trip cost for top destinations, more than three quarters of respondents said "no." Yet more than 40 percent said "unmanaged ancillary fees" of all flavors represent between 5 percent and 15 percent of their organizations' total T&E costs. Another 27 percent said such fees represent even more of the total.

- Baking And Data Reporting
What the heck does baking have to do with travel data reporting, you ask?
It makes for an interesting metaphor. I used this concept in the speech I gave at the ACTE Canada conference last week in Toronto. I’ll admit that my skit was a bit hokey, but the points about poor preparation of data, half-baked analysis and hanging Christmas lights on plain-jane data were too good to pass up.

- Travelport First To Cut Deal With BA
Far from its one time part owner Travelport (Galileo and Worldspan) has now concluded a deal with BA. The deal extends the current opt in/opt out arrangement for significantly less than the regular Legacy GDS segment fee. It should be noted that in the UK Home market - the moving of content out of GDSs by BA has been under way for some time with the Lime Management.
We can expect to see more content moved out of the legacy GDSs to systems such as Lime over time.

The American Hotel & Lodging Association during the past few days produced interesting dialogue providing some insight into where the lodging industry is heading. Hotels are bracing for a tough 2010 that will see further rate declines; luxury properties will be the first to come back; business travel will remain weak; and hotels will continue to charge ancillary fees for amenities like high-speed Internet, according to comments made at AH&LA's fall conference here in New York.

- The Elephant In The Room Regarding Card Merchant Fees
For years airlines have made statements that the merchant fees that they pay when they accept cards as a form of payment were ‘next on the list’ of distribution costs that would be in focus. And more recently we are beginning to see evidence that this is true with examples such as United Airlines' reported change of policy when it comes to [some] travel management companies' use of their merchant agreement and KLM’s announcement of a credit card surcharge of EUR 7.50 being debated.

Egencia, the travel management arm of Expedia, says its Index is an indicator of the overall supply landscape and other factors in top cities globally. The data indicates that, at least across North America, it'll continue to be a buyer's market up until at least the last two quarters of next year.
