Recent congressional hearings underscored a host of problems consumers can face with long-term-care insurance. The coverage may still be worthwhile — particularly if stroke or dementia runs in your family — but you should know the risks.

Digital City - Local Lifestyle and Entertainment News

At Harmony Playground in Brooklyn's Prospect Park, two unlicensed ice cream vendors are pushing parents to the brink. They feel the constant ringing of the bell day in and day out is causing too much temptation for children. It's not that these parents want to keep their children from enjoying a classic childhood experience, but they feel that two vendors right inside the playground is just too much.

Last fall, after parents in Chicago complained about the uncleanliness, noise and possible drug deals taking place inside some of the ice cream trucks, ice cream men were banned from the city's 18th Ward. Even in Vegas, where bright lights and noise abound, ice cream men are prohibited from jingling their bells after 8PM during summer months.

Even more troubling than the temptation of unhealthy treats is the fact that ice cream men are not setting the example they once did. Gone are the days of the majestic, decent and responsible ice cream man. Nowadays many of these guys are grimy in appearance, smoking cigarettes and dishing out goodies while not wearing shirts.

So is there anyone out there upholding those nostalgic ice cream man memories of the 1970s? Luckily, the answer is yes. Cool Cycles, in Tacoma, Wash., is helping change the image of the industry. The drivers roll in on bright cheerful motorcycles, dressed professionally in white suits and black bow ties, serving icy treats at affordable prices and driving off when they're done.

Other gourmet-style ice cream vendors are taking advantage of the demand for healthier alternatives. In Seattle, Wash., the Parfait Organic Artisan Ice Cream truck serves small batch organic ice cream that's all made from scratch.

The Coolhaus ice cream truck in Los Angeles offers homemade goodies and ice cream, and Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream in New York uses hormone-free milk from pasture-raised cows in their ice cream which is served in an organic cone or a biodegradable cup.

These fresh, organic ice creams are more costly, but it's a small price to pay for good health.
