    Dear Cousin John,

I believe that we are sharing the same blood and we are descendents of the same ancestors.

The Ofiesh (or Afeich, Afeiche or Ofeich or Ofeiche) is the same family. The spelling might change depending on the education (French or English educated) and the mother language for the Ofiesh in Lebanon is the Arabic language (Lebanese dialect).

We are originally from Mheidthet an annexed village to Bikfaya a famous town in Mount-Lebanon (Lebanon). After the first civil war in Lebanon (in 1840) some of the Christian families of Mount-Lebanon moved to the Bekaa valley in order to help and protect the other Christian families in the Bekaa Valley. Some others of the family moved to Beirut city (which became the capital) after the second civil war in Lebanon (1860).

Early in the 20th, century, and because of the Othman, some of the Ofiesh immigrated to Canada and to the USA and the most known of them was the Archbishop Aftimios Ofiesh.

These days, our family in the Old Country Lebanon is spread in the following areas:

Mheidthet Bikfaya, Fanar, Ayroun, Bolonia in Mount-Lebanon,
Beirut city (mainly in Ashrafieh neighborhood),
Kab-Elias, Chatura and Zahleh (in the Bekaa Valley)

Some of our cousins have a secondary house across the old country and some of them the own houses in Lebanon and in Canada, Belgium, France, the Senegal and the Ivory Cost.

I will name some of my direct cousins who live in Europe such as:

Dr. Chaoki Ofeich, M.D he lives with his family in Toulouse – France,
Dr. Toufic Afeich, M.D Gynecologist (known as Cyril Afeich) he lives in Brussels and he own the largest private clinic in Brussels,
Karim Afeich, Mechanical Engineer, he is running 2 hotels in Brussels,
Mounir Ofeich, Master Degree in Mathematics, he lives in Beirut and Paris and he is running a high school in Fanar (9 Km of Beirut),

The names will continue with a long list and we will be sharing more information about our family after receiving your feedback.

I am looking forward to hear from you the soonest possible and to be in touch with the largest number of our family members either by e-mail or over the phone and I am looking forward to build our family association with an appropriate website

  • Re: Ofieshes in Pennsylvania
I am researching George Ofiesh (born in Mouhaidee, Lebanon in 1897 and died in 1929) who came to the US about 1915 and married a young woman (Emily--we can't find her last name) from Altoona, PA, in 1923. She was born in 1907 and died in 1997). Have you heard of that Lebanon city (Google and MapQuest don't recognize it), and maybe Emily's maiden name? I would greatly appreciate any information you have since I am preparing a research report for a Historic Wilmington Foundation Plaque for the Ofiesh Building here. ET

    Hi John -

As I mentioned in the e-mail I sent you earlier today, I have some info
on my side of the Ofiesh family.

I re-read this post of yours from 2000, and think I have further info
on that. I met a "cousin" in San Francisco a number of years ago,
who is Father Gregory Ofiesh, son of the Nicholas you were
mentioning. Unfortunately, I've lost touch with him (he no longer
has his church in SF), but I think he is living near the Belmont area
    south of SF.

My uncle, Raymond Ofiesh, and his son Gregory, probably have
info on Father Gregory. I'll try to dig that up this week.

Let me know at "mugwump1@comcast.net" if this is useful.

    Best regards,

    Steve Huff

PS - there seem to be other spellings of "Ofiesh" like "Afiesh" -
my cousin Greg used that earlier in his lifef.

  • Ofiesh family
    Hello anyone --
I have some information of the Ofiesh family who imigrated from Lebanon about 1920-21. Nicholas Ofiesh and many others of the family were prominent priests in the Orthodox Church. Nicholas lived and raised a large family in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, which is in Westmoreland County. Anyone who is part of this family or has knowledge of these Ofieshes -- your input would be greatly appreicated. Thank you.

  • Ofieshes in Pennsylvania
    Dolly --
I am inclined to say "yes." I do have some Ofieshes in Altoona, Pennsylvania. One is Tofick Ofiesh, who was born in a Lebanese town that appears to be the same one that you mention, but perhaps one of us has a wrong spelling. I can't from my memory spell it right now, but I would hope that you can contact me through e-mail and we can exchange more thoroughly. Incidentally, I was born and raised in Johnstown, and my mother was born in Altoona. My e-mail address is in my first communication regarding Ofieshes.

lived in New Orleans from sometime early in the l900s
