MAPLETON, Iowa -- Douglas J. Uhl, 55, of Mapleton passed away Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at his home surrounded by his family.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Dr. Scott Fiege officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 7 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.
Doug was born March 1, 1954, in Mapleton, the son of Donald and the late Lois (Wolterman) Uhl. He graduated from Maple Valley High School in 1973. Doug farmed his entire life and in recent years was also employed at GOMACO.
In his free time he enjoyed spending time with family, tractor pulls and being a part of the Monona County Fair Board.
Survivors include two sons, Todd and his special friend, Shelly Bruxvort of Sheldon, Iowa, and Steven and his wife, Amanda of Mapleton; one daughter, Jessica of Mapleton; four grandchildren, Madison, Hannah, Shelly, and Philip; his father, Donald Uhl of Mapleton; three brothers and their spouses, Greg and Judy Uhl and Jerry and Sharon Uhl all of Ida Grove, Iowa, and Tom and Deb Uhl from Danbury, Iowa; one sister, Jean Uhl of Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews.

MAPLETON, Iowa -- Terrance "Terry" Smith, 57, of Mapleton died suddenly Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, at his residence.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa, with the Rev. Karen Garrison officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
Terrance Lee Smith was born Feb. 4, 1952, in Onawa, the son of Raymond and Edna Mae (Kirk) Smith. He had lived his entire life in various locations in Monona County, Iowa. He had been a resident of Mapleton the past few years.
He was a farm laborer and worked for various farmers including Jerry Jirovsky, Baynard Willey and Lakin Farms. He also drove the U.S. Mail truck for several years.
He was an outdoorsman and especially enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include five brothers, Larry of Le Mars, Iowa, Robert "Bob" of Kremmling, Colo., David and his wife Sharon of Sergeant Bluff, Dennis and his wife Sue of Castana, Iowa, and Dean of Mapleton; a sister, Sue of Omaha; and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Judy M. Brandt, age 63, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, went home to be with the Lord on October 24, 2009, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha.
She was born in Dunlap, Iowa, on August 21, 1946, to Walter and Maymie (Kline) Shumate. Judy was a teacher at Community Christian School retiring in 2006.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Richard Brandt; son, Gregory (Becky) Brandt; daughter, Mindi Brandt; son, Mark (Chantelle) Brandt; son, John (Annette) Brandt; daughter, Gwendolyn Brandt; son, Frederick "Fritz" (Amy) Brandt; brothers, Ed Shumate, Fred Shumate and Tom Shumate; sister, Jane Kunze; 10 grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family will be Tuesday, 6 to 8 p.m., at the Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. Funeral Service Wednesday, 11 a.m., at the funeral home. Interment is in the Memorial Park Cemetery.

Alice Eleanor (Ferdig) McHugh, of Orleans, Ind., passed from this life into Eternity early Sunday morning, October 25, 2009, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center in Bedford, Ind., at the age of 85.
She was born March 5, 1924, to her parents, Mike and Hester White Ferdig, of Mapleton, Iowa. She grew up in Iowa, graduated from Onawa, Iowa High School and normal school teacher training. On August 12, 1942, she married the love of her life, Willis McHugh. They raised four children and one grandson while living in Iowa. She and her husband moved to Orleans, in 1982. She was a wonderful wife and mother, was always very faithful and active in church. She was a member of the Orleans Christian Church. She faithfully read, memorized and meditated on God's Word and was a Sunday School teacher for many years. While in Iowa, she served many years in Parent Teacher organizations and was honored with a "Mother of the Year" award in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She enjoyed reading, sewing, baking, family visits, and walking. It was a particular privilege for her to babysit and help raise other people's children, who considered her a second grandmother.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years and her daughter, Eleanor (John) Emslie, of Larimore, N.D., 3 sons, Larry (Theresa) McHugh, of Fort Myers, Fla., Jerry (Lindia) McHugh, of San Antonio, Texas, and Michael (Sue) McHugh, of Fort Madison, Iowa; grandson she raised is Larry McHugh, Jr., of Paoli, Ind.; 14 grandchildren; and several great grandchildren; sister, Violette, of S.D.
The funeral will be Thursday, at 11 a.m., at the Orleans Christian Church with Bro. Tom Bostic and Bro. Nelson Lee officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Orleans. Friends are invited to call at Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home in Orleans on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m., and on Thursday at the church from 10 a.m., until the services. The family requests memorials to the American Diabetes Association American Diabetes Association American Diabetes Association American Diabetes Association.
