  • Introduction to Virginia Tech Football
Virginia Tech Hokies Football The Virginia Tech Hokies football team is a college football program that competes in NCAA Division I-FBS, specifically in the Coastal Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference . Their home games are played at Lane Stadium, considered one of the loudest stadiums in the country and recognized in 2005 by Rivals.com as having the best home-field advantage in the country. With a career record of 208-108-4 following the 2007 season, head coach Frank Beamer is the third-winningest active head coach in Division I-FBS, ranking behind only Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno. The Hokies currently have the fourth-longest bowl game streak in the country, having participated in the postseason 15 straight years in a row, every year since 1993. Only Michigan, Florida State, and Florida have longer current streaks. In that span, the Hokies have finished with a Top-10 ranking four times, won six conference championships (one Southern Conference three Big East and two ACC), and played once for the national championship, losing to Florida State University 46-29 in the 2000 Sugar Bowl. • Fire Bryan Stinespring
A sentiment growing amongst Hokie fans everywhere is that the Hokies will not advance to the next level with the current offensive coordinator, Bryan Stinespring. Stinespring who became coordinator of the offense during the 2001 Gator Bowl against Florida State. Ever since then, the Hokies have struggled to win the big games and most of that can be attributed to flat play of very talented player and poor play calling by the coaches. The ire has boiled to its highest point amongst many fans after the 2008 BCS Orange Bowl loss to the Kansas Jayhawks. Websites like techsuperfans.com, the forums at techsideline.com, and the newly created firebryanstinespring.blogspot.com are bustling with activity on the subject. Unconfirmed whois lookups seem to indicate that Bryan Stinespring himself bought the hostname firebryanstinespring.com in September of 2007. This, after Daily Press Sports Writer Norm Wood reported in April that Stinespring was not worried about the site, even joking "My dad's not on there, is he? That would upset me."

  • What it means to be a Hokie
We may never know the true meaning behind Virginia Tech's mascot being a Hokie, but one thing is for sure; we sure know what it means to BE a Hokie! Those who are not part of Virginia Tech can look unto the school and realize little familiarity other than its minimal knowledge of them as an NCAA football team. One of stern defense, strong special teams, and home to Michael Vick. They do not know of the tradition, the legacies, the other sports we may have, or the comraderie that is Virginia Tech every Saturday, and occasionally Thursday, for what becomes one of the most emotional places to be. Others may look on and see Virginia Tech as a mediocre football team who consistently holds its ranking, but never wins the titles. To us, it is a feeling of utter satsfaction. Even the Maroon and Orange begins to look good, and you can't help but picture wearing any other color, for any other team, for the rest of your life. Knowing that every Saturday beginning in the end of August, we can gather round wherever we are and feel that connection. That dying love for the team that we were engrained with as students there. Remembering those greuiling hungover Saturday mornings where we had to drag ourselves out of our dorms at 9am to begin drinking for those terribly scheduled 12pm games (thanks Jim Weaver). Curing your hangover with another solo cup of Natty Ice, only to ...
